Introduction

Masibambane Home for Disabled Children was formed in 1996 by a group of Parents of the Children with all sorts of Disabilities in the Amathole District Municipality. The aim of this Organization was to empower Parents of Children with Disabilities and their children with disabilities in order to develop and educate their Children with Disabilities within an Inclusive Environment.

Masibambane Home for the Disabled Children has evolved into a special and unique Centre.

It has blossomed from a dormant stage from a tiny seed to a new awakening and a stronger movement of Parents of Children with Disabilities.

To date Masibambane enrolled one hundred and twenty (121) Children across the Eastern Cape, but the Department of Social Development is subsidizing the Home with 72 children, we are still negotiating with department about the number of children who are not subsidized but are residing within the Home.  The overall objective of Masibambane is to make sure that Children with Disabilities are integrated into the mainstream Society, through giving them Equal Access to opportunities available to all other children.

Our Mission

MOTIVATION: It is hereby motivated with a great respect that this Service be continued in respect of Masibambane inmates due to the following reasons:  Seventy Seven Children with Disabilities are residing at the Home as they are taught Life Skills, like washing themselves, cleaning their teeth, dressing themselves etc.  Others are getting service like Stimulation, Toilet Training.  They are also taught how to Socialize, Behave and Respect each other, their Parents and the Community.  We also teach them Leadership Skills.  They are involved in Sport, Cultural and Music Activities.

When they are in age of 18 years they are referred to the following Projects: Poultry, Gardening, Rabbitory, Carpentry, Sewing and Knitting and to acquire skills that will enable them to be self-reliant.

Children with Disabilities were found wandering around Middledrift Areas aimlessly.  They were deprived of education and neglected in normal schools because of their disability.  Some of the Parents misused the grants received by these Children and this resulted in abandonment displayed by their Parents.

Disabled Adults and Parents of Children with Disabilities gathered and formed an Organization called Masibambane Disabled Association.

Most of these inmates come from Rural Areas characterized by a high rate of Unemployment, Literacy Level, and they end up being victims of all sorts of abuses.
