Challenges

-         Parents still needs to be empowered about Rights and Disability Issues; we have experienced a problem where one of our beneficiaries that her Guardian didn’t come to fetch her for June holidays as all children is taken by their parents for holidays. It was unfortunately for this child there was no one came to fetch her and she was alone with Child Caregivers who are looking after her, the child experienced difficulties in her health condition she became sick and was taken to Hospital and stayed for three days and we informed her Guardian about the situation of the child but she didn’t respond.

We negotiated with the Department of Social Development including the guardian about this challenge and we resolved by advising the guardian to hire somebody to look after the child for that period and return her when the school re-opens.

-         The water irrigation pipes are old and rusty and in between are broken and yet because of drought the production was not good but we are seeking funding for fixing these pipes.

-         49 beneficiaries who are residing within the Home are not subsidized by Department of Social Development; they only subsidized 72 beneficiaries whilst we have 121 beneficiaries residing within the Home.

The year 2012 has indeed been a very challenging year yet existing.  Many strides has been made in or Provinces in terms of protecting our Children with Disabilities, but we need to remain focus as Parents to empower ourselves in order to develop and educate our Children in an Inclusive Environment.  Although we have made many advances in our organization our Children still experience deprivation of the rights, variations of violence and abuse that are inexcusable.  Young children are a particular vulnerable group requiring appropriate integrated and comprehensive care and support.  Early access to grants, foods and nutrition, health care, stimulation and other rights services and benefits are critical to their survival and development. Collectively we have come a long way but there are still long roads ahead.

Way Forward

-         Keep on conducting Awareness Campaigns about disability issues there’s still a need for talks because there are few Parents who lack knowledge about disability.

-         Look forward to invite Social Workers and Psychologists to render their services at the Home for Parents of Children with Disabilities.

-         Proposals to different Donors and Departments for assistance in fixing of water irrigation pipes especially Department of Rural Development and Land Reforms.

-         Negotiations with the Department of Social Development to increase the number of children subsidized because 49 children are not subsidized whilst they are residing within the Home. We are experiencing a high rate of inflation as department last increase the subsidy in 2007 and we fall short of the budget.

Conclusion

-         This report has once again offered us the opportunity to reflect, evaluate, to look at both the achievements and areas needing improvement. These things also make us look forward, to prepare to come to grips with the challenges that face us and to move forward. Although we had challenges, we remain committed to our mission and we are confident we will be instrumental in meeting our goals.
